I want to write a poem
But have no idea what to do!
Sound familiar? Tons of gals dream of becoming Shakespeare and penning that perfect love poem that will turn her into Juliette and her boyfriend into an everyday romeo. But maybe the creative juices just aren't flowing and your paper looks more like a painting of a snowy field than life changing prose. Need help getting started? Read on.
Creating the perfect poem isn't about being perfect. It's about being yourself and exposing a vulnerable part of who you are and how you feel. If you're not willing to put a little bit of yourself on the line, then you're probably not ready to write a good love poem.
Now that you're ready to be a bit gushy, think of a special occasion or a special feeling your partner gives you. Make a list of words that come to mind when you think about this feeling or event. Keep in mind a love poem doesn't have to be literal or serious. A funny poem can be just as romantic as one with big words and flowery writing. Focus on your personality and what comes most easily to you.
Finally, work those thought bubble words into short sentences and small groupings (called stanzas). Rhyming isn't required, but if you want to give it a whirl focus on the first and third lines or the second and fourth lines rhyming. It might help you brainstorm as well.
Finally, read the completed work out loud. If it flows well and makes sense to you, chances are you can now call yourself a poet. Even if it's not worthy of publication, chances are your boyfriend will be so flattered at your attempt that it will sound like pure... well... poetry to him.

In a moment I had a plan
Those blue eyes and smile
I had to make you my man.
It's not at all hard to see
Not at all hard to understand
You make my heart feel flutters
Every time you take my hand.
